Norse High King Odin lost his cute, cuddly puppy Fenris on a walk, and the dog burst into the hellhound that menaced the underground world. Odin promised your king rivers of gold and mushroom ale, in order to send you down to retrieve the beagle. Talk about the corruption from above... As far as strategy and micro-management games go, “Diggles: The Myth of Fenris” is more akin to “Dungeon Keeper” by Bullfrog than “Settlers”. In Diggles, you play as the king of a clan of dwarves known as the Diggles, governing over your people in every possible detail of the lives. This means building dwellings (tents), farming food sources such as mushrooms and hamsters. If you, like me, are a control freak that demands total control over your mindless puppets to the point of deciding who they should mate with, this game would satisfy your tyrannical streak.

Your people are not complete drones. Like any healthy people, they have daily life cycles and lifespan, skills with which to develop and to impart to their offspring. Yes, they do mate in this game. Just don’t expect to see any indecent exposure; it had been developed for kids after all. There are also monsters and rival clans, not to mention other dangers underground which plague your settlement of peaceful dwarfs. If you survive, there’s fiery underground abyss of lava that you must forth venture into to complete your mission of locating Fenris. Sure, as if the dogget would tamely lick your hand and grovel back to the world above. All this hurdles just add to your frustrations that there are so much to experience but insufficient time to enjoy it all.

The graphics are fully 3D and very well drawn, but are not really anything to write home about by today’s standard. The most annoying thing I felt about the game was that you could only pan and rotate by 45 degrees on all direction. This is sufficient to enjoy the minor details in the game, but highly inefficient when it comes to control, which may prove fatal on some levels. The sound quality is somewhat better, with minor details of the ambient surrounding noises chucked in. All in all, this is decent attempt at designing a micro-management empire sim that fell to obscurity due to game-play hassle.
