Background:
Mortal Kombat 3 is a sequel to previously released, excellent Mortal Kombat games, 1 and 2. As its predecessors, Mortal Kombat 3 is nothing short of spectacular. Released in 1995 by Midway for Sega Genesis, SNES, and later on for PC, this is still an amazing game, 11 years later. Graphics are incredibly realistic, animation way ahead of its time and the atmosphere and the gameplay perfect.

Gameplay:
The whole game is incredibly smooth, especially the PC version. Like mentioned, animation is smooth and realistic. All the characters look natural and have a variety in movement, as each is made of hundreds of sprites. Like in previous MK games, you have the standard arsenal at your disposal: high punch, low punch, high kick and low kick, you can jump, duck, move left and right, 4 special moves, a throw, and that's pretty much it to the basics; unlike MKII, you have 2 extra special moves, but the really cool innovations are new fatalities, Babality (when your character turns your opponent into a baby), Brutality (when your character beats the living crap out of your opponent until he/she explodes), and friendship (when your character offers a peace offering to your opponent, usually presenting a flower or balloons.) This is particularly cool, because all the battles don't have to end in bloodshed, although they usually do. Also, it is worth mentioning that the fatalities are more brutal than ever and way more bloody. One of the innovations to this game is the ability to knock your opponent out to another stage, by upper-cutting him. Also, some stages feature stage fatalities.

Characters:
Disappointment!
Such a great game missed out on some of the coolest characters of MK ever. Scorpion and Reptile totally sat out on this one, Ninja Sub-Zero was replaced by the unmasked brother, Baraka is missing, and a couple more. Even though all these cool dudes are missing, this game features some of the yet coolest blood-thirsty fighters ever: Sektor (the red robot), Cyrax (his yellow brother), Smoke (once a living being, now just an automatron), Kabal (a man who cannot live without his mask), Sheeeva (possibly in some kind of a blood relationship with Goro as she has four arms and is also selectable unlike Goro), Stryker (a police officer), and others. The game features Kano and Sonya.

Graphics:
Not much to say about graphics of this game; absolutely amazing. Way ahead of its time. The new technology was used and in a good fashion as it put this game way higher than the competition.

Sound:
Like graphics, sound is also amazing. Every stage has its theme, every character seems to have different moans when hurt, the narrator yelling "Finish Him" at the end of the battle more creepy than ever, and Shao-Khan's discouraging "you will never win" shouts in the final battle, REALLY discouraging and creepy.

Conclusion:
This game was great in 1995, and is still a major kick-butt nowadays, 11 years later. A must-have, definitely for every gamer.

This isn't half as good as Mortal Kombat 2, the singeplayer isn't half as well balanced, some of the characters are way too powerful while others are useless, and there are too little moves for certain characters.
All the new fatalities and their varients are really gool though.
