Chances are you will have played a LucasArts game at some point in the past. Chances are it was one of the many excellent adventure games released during the 90´s. The Monkey Island´s, Sam and Max, Full Throttle etc. are all fondly remembered for superb scripting, sly and often hilarious humour, lavish graphics and damn difficult puzzles.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis fits neatly into the classic LucasArts adventures, originally released between the second Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle, the games age is showing more than the latter but all the hallmarks of the golden age of LucasArts are present. The SCUMM engine design is comfortably familiar to anyone with even a passing interest in adventure games, the simple point and click interface is idiot-proof and the story moves us slickly and convincingly along the way.

After a unique interactive intro sequence, we find Indy in New York, catching up with former colleague (and flame?) Sophia, who fills in the back story of the ancient secrets of Atlantis and possible reasons for the Nazi´s curiosity into Atlantis and the secrets and uses of Orichalcum, a mysterious and powerful substance. As with most games in this genre, the less of the plot you learn before playing the better the enjoyment you will get from playing.

The big problem with adventure games is replay value. After you´ve spent endless hours completing one, re-treading the same ground can become a monotonous task. FoA has found a way around this problem, early in the game you are forced to make a decision, your choice putting you on one of 3 paths for the middle part of the game, the `Team´, `Wits´ or `Fists´ paths respectively. In the `Team´ path, you carry on your journey with Sophia by your side (or on the odd occasion you may end up by her side). The `Wits´ path is more brain engaging, the `Fists´ reverts Indy to more brawn tactics but don´t worry, it´s by no means without its share of puzzles. Also, FoA´s puzzles themselves have great replay value. Many puzzles can be solved in several different ways adding an extra dimension lacking in many other adventure games. Indeed, before writing this review I played through the game 3 times in succession to follow each path, I rarely revisit adventure games within a year of completion. The replay factor really is that good.

The gripes are few but there are one or two. Occasionally, obtaining an essential object cast in shadow or hiding chameleon like, blending with the background can prove to be a nightmare, you won´t throw your mouse through your monitor but it still grates a little. Fighting is a let down too, whilst it is not too difficult to walk away a victor it doesn´t often feel like you controlled Indy through a bout. Also, certain sections where precision mouse movement is needed can be frustrating at first, as you´ll find out first hand whilst ballooning. Oh and unfortunately there is no speech pack here. No biggie, especially to those of us old and ugly enough to have played the game first time round without that luxury but it is a nice feature to have, even though the music and effects are more than adequate. These are minor hiccups however and never deter you from enjoying and completing the game.

So, should you download this? Is it worth it? Will you enjoy it?
I´m pleased to report a resounding yes all round. Taxing but not impossible puzzles, great (and classic) characters and a genuinely interesting plot all culminate nicely. Here´s hoping LucasArts stop with sloppy Star Wars games and focus on the things that made them great in the first place.

Along with Full Throttle I would have to say that this is one of the greatest point and clicks ever, I grew up on this one as well.
