Doom. End of review. Okay, well not really, but it could easily be, due to the fact that this is one of those games that needs NO introduction, a title which is built purely around its fierce reputation as one of the original and best 3D FPS ever created, something which most gamers, if not all, would agree on.

Since Doom's humble beginnings back in 1993, we have not only been offered many additions to the Doom family (Ultimate, Final, and the most recent - Doom3), but also a whole new genre in gaming, which is still successful today, from games like the original Quake to modern masterpieces like Unreal Tournament 2003 and Quake 3 Arena.

Where would we be without a game like this? Is it fair to say Doom revolutionized games as we know them today? Well I don't know where we would be, but without a powerful game like this to set the standards (Doom even needed its own GFX chip to be able to run on the SNES), I'm pretty sure things would have taken longer to progress. Look at all of the latest PC games, there´s not one major title that won't work without some sort of graphics support - something which started out on the Doom title - a game which pushed the 486 into hospital, demanding more power for anything near smooth game play. As for a revolution - Doom itself is a revolution. Enough said.

Turn off the lights, lock the doors, gather a pile of food and a bottle of drink, pull out the phone and get ready to enter the world of Doom, as I take you through one of the greatest games ever made.

As the game loads up you are thrown directly into the action - a lone soldier sent to an unknown world full of monsters and other creatures from hell - or so you think. You start with nothing more than a hand-gun and knuckle-duster, but will soon enough end up in a massacre with weapons supporting rocket-blasters, shotguns, and my favorite - the awesomely powerful chain-gun. I've played this game so many times that I can see the whole first level playing through my head like a movie, something which soon enough you will experience for yourself.

The game consists of many dangers, but along the way there are also quite a few items you can collect to help you on your journey from level to level, things such as armor, weapons, ammunition, health boosts and more. As you will soon find out for yourself, these are all things that you should stock up on whenever you have the chance, there´s nothing worse than entering a room full of creatures, with a low health level and realizing that the closest health pack was way back near the level beginning, or entering a monster-filled room with only 5 bullets. Don't get yourself too confident though, as I mentioned before, the world of Doom is full of evil beings, so don't think that just because you have some extra armor your safe against a group of 4 beasts shooting what is the equivalent of a rocket blaster at you, out of their stomach - because you will be very mistaken.



Speed and fast-thinking are two essentials for playing this game. Unlike many titles you may have played, the AI in Doom is pretty advanced, the monsters that you have made aware of your presence to, maybe by walking into a room with them, or shooting them, won't just forget about you. Be alert that if you run away they will try and follow you to the death - this means that running around corners is not enough, they are smart enough to find a way out the room and come around the corner too. Thinking fast is good, but being able to react speedily on your decisions is even more crucial. Say you open a door and inside contains 3 marines and 2 rocket-blasting monsters, whatever you do, they will now be aware of your presence - you must quickly decide if you have the power to forcefully enter the room and take them out, or if you have to make a run for it, re-equip and then return. Make your decision too late and you'll get blasted.

Note that just above I mentioned marines, you must be wondering what marines are doing there and why they aren´t helping you, well, this is very simple - their dead, or to be more specific, UNDEAD. Unfortunately there are many undead-marines in the world of Doom, all whom of which were once like you, alive. In this world when good dies it regenerates as evil, so your sure to see some of your old buddies hanging around, probably trying to shoot your head off with a shotgun, don't be scared though, you can take them down with a few shots yourself. The sad thing is there aren´t any good guys here to help you out, but hey, who needs them anyway, they will just add to the collection of undead if they get killed, something that you don't need.

Then game features many levels to run through, each getting harder to complete as time goes on. Certain levels contain secret areas, which if you access add up to your final score at the end of the level. You will find that the maps consist of more than just running through a few places, shooting bad guys and winning - Doom is also a game which needs thought, for example, you may find yourself trying to cross a bridge, which isn't open. You can either run across it and loose health by touching the lava surface or you can think of searching for a nearby button which you can press or shoot to unlock the bridge.

On the SNES Doom needed it's own graphics chip to support the game - hence why the cartridge feels heavier than most other SNES titles. The PC is an exception when it comes to graphics, any VGA support will run the games visuals, which for it's time were very nice indeed, especially compared to games like Wolf 3D, but in order for smooth game play I wouldn't try to run the game on anything lower than a Pentium 1 machine with at least 16mb RAM. I've managed to run the game on my MONO 486 laptop with 8mb RAM, but processing time was slow, to say the least.

Controls for Doom are really simple - the classic keyboard settings of the directional arrow keys to move along with the spacebar to active buttons/open doors, the number keys to change weapon, and of course the control button to fire! Doom was obviously out before the days of mouse control in games, and the Doom controls are what I used in games all the way up to Unreal Tournament, when I finally decided to use the mouse - and have since not looked back.

What good is a game with poor sound? Sound adds atmosphere and is a must in every game, along with music. It's like horror films, think how less scary they would be without sound and those spooky music scores, well Doom is no exception. The sounds in Doom are perfect, not over the top, just perfect, there are sound effects when there need to be, monster noises, and of course weapon sounds. As if all that wasn't enough, Doom supports an AWESOME musical score, especially the first few levels, which have even spawned quite a few great internet remixes!

Overall Doom is a classic in it's own right, and it's in a world of it's own, the beginning of one of the best genres ever created, and even now, after some-what 10 years, Doom still makes it into my top 10 favorite games of all time - a decision which I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in making.

how about this: doom was the father of SCARY FPS games

while wolfenstien esentially kick-started FPS games, doom kick-started the scary aspect of the genre

I agree w/ Biskuti Wolfenstein3d was the father of 3d FPSs not Doom. Doom gave birth to a new generation of FPSs. Also ALL Doom games are BEST played w/ GZDoom engine. The best there is plus supports TRUE OpenGL rendering and aceleration.

Ok you all are wrong and noobs, Battle zone is the first, but if we are talking about the PC and dos then Hovertank 3D is the first fallowed by catacombs 3D then Wolfenstein 3D and THEN Doom and Wolfenstein 3D is the father of all FPSs not doom, doom was it's offspring. Any on who disagrees look it up... Noobs

Muis, Wolfenstien is not the first, Ultima Underworld is. It contained the first ever 360 rotation movement. -tongue-
