INTRO
SNK have made some fine franchises in the time of neo-geo and metal slug is no exception. In 1996 metal slug made its first appearance on the neo-geo. Its incredible graphics, amazing sound and some of the best gameplay made it a great choice for arcade operators to add it to their MVS collection. Now, you got the opportunity to download it yourself and see what all the fuss is about.

You play as Marko, the hero is out to capture the evil General Morden and...that is about it. There isn´t much story to this game, but then again no one at the arcades really cared.

GAMEPLAY
Its fast, it´s challenging and most importantly, its a whole lot of fun! The game delivers the action so well that it will always draw you back in for more. The variety of weapons (which are picked up after saving POWs) keep things nice and fresh. The games trademark vehicle, the slug tank, is also readily available to drive and introduces a whole different gameplay system. It fires powerful cannons with an infinite built in machine gun and is vital for you to complete the game without using too many credits. The gameplay is very well done and the enjoyment should keep you coming back.

GRAPHICS
At the time, the system was 6 years old, but the visuals in this game are nothing short of amazing. The console´s hardware is pushed to its full extent with some of the sweetest eye-candy ever seen in a 2D side-scroller. The animation of the vehicles and characters are so smooth that it takes the rip out of any other 16bit game of the time. The bosses will really impress you though with their huge sizes and brilliant detail. The colourful and detailed backgrounds are no exception either. Its obvious the developers but in an effort to impress the people looking for pretty visuals.

SOUND
The sometimes noisy arcade may not be the best place to experience the sound so to truly appreciate the sound you´ve got to play it at home. Metal Slug has a fantastic musical score backed with the crisp explosions and the satisfying death screams of the enemy soldiers. The announcer does some good voice acting too. Altogether you got some fine audio in this game.

VALUE
13 credits is a great deal for a game of this quality and the 13MB download is worth it even for dial up users. The game spans 6 missions which may seem small. This shouldn´t matter though as this game as plenty of replay value.

OVERALL
Metal Slug has a lot going for it and should be downloaded right away by any fan of the action genre. If you see it in the arcade, try it out some time and bring a friend too. Its worth the credits, but whenever you´re home you always got this to keep you occupied.

Metal Slug is like a slightly easier version of Contra with better graphics, characters, and something I really wished was in Contra, GRENADES!

You need a Neo Geo emulator (like NeoRage for example, which is also available on the applications section of CGN, the version available there isn't the newest one though) to play the neo geo roms
