Did you try double pressing the acclerator for the nitros?
Thats usually the case in the road rash games.

I loved the Megadrive Road Rash 1 + 2, 3 was crap, but I missed out on this one. Boy am I glad I have it. Road Rash becomes pretty. Now if only I can work out which button works the nitros... :)
