Mudokons are an enslaved race, forced to work in a Meat Factory where unbeknownst to them, they´re soon to be the meat. Fortunately they have a saviour in their midst, Abe, the unlikely hero of the game overhears these plans and sets off to escape, hopefully rescuing as many as of his fellow Mudokons along the way as he can. Along his journey Abe has to avoid a number of hazards, solve a number of puzzles and have near perfect timing in his running, jumping, creeping and rolling.

The hazards come in many forms, machinery, bombs and perilous platforms all appear frequently but the real challenge is the enemies. Several species of adversary crop up throughout the game, from the armed insect-like Guards-Slig´s, super fast aliens and dog like creatures, all intent on destroying any Mudokon who gets ideas above his station. Each species of enemy has its own characteristics and the A.I remains exceptional all through the game. You will not be finishing this game in a day, I guarantee it.

It´s a tough job to categorise Oddworld. It falls mainly into two genres but is it platform or puzzle? The slick movement and pinpoint accuracy needed to get around recalls the original two Prince of Persia games, the puzzles mix in so smoothly with the action that the line blurs and you never quite know what to expect. The one thing that remains constant is the difficulty, pitched high from the start and never letting up. This is not as much a hindrance as it may sound, the early screens are merely walkthroughs, giving you step by step instructions ensuring that when you´re on your own very shortly, at least you can make the ugly but likeable sonofabitch move. The puzzles are mostly tough, no doubt about it but many can be solved in a variety of ways and sooner or later, you´ll figure at least one way out.

The controls as it happens are extremely easy to pick up, movement is as simple as possible and works all the better for it. An interesting control is the ability to make Abe speak commands to his fellow Mudokons, again simple to pick up (although newbie players to the game may want to write these down for the first few plays) although the situations in which you have to use these vocal commands become increasingly more difficult as the games puzzles advance.

Graphically and sonically Oddworld shines head and shoulders above similarly aged games. It´s a credit to its developers that it stands up to time so well, the late 90´s may not seem so far away but the advances in gaming visuals move on extremely quickly. The cartoon-like animation of the characters is always spot on, ditto the backgrounds and the sounds more or less fitting the bill (Abe´s speech is particularly entertaining).

If you give up easy, don´t bother with this - this is a fairly large download and people without patience will lose interest fairly quickly. For the rest of you, Oddworlds well worth the credits!

For those who like platform games with a bit of strategy/adventure, then this is the game for you. The gameplay is excellent and the graphics of the game are very clear.  :D
