Short Introduction:
Another great game, this game is a mix between Super Cars (Amiga/NES) and Micro Machines; it uses a Top-View camera position which looks extremely cool. One of the best things in this game is the possibility to shoot each other down with some guns on your car there is also an opportunity to upgrade your car for example with better a engine, some new tires or some armour, further you also have to fix the damage on your car that your car gets during a race. The damage option is very nice because opponents can also shoot your car down, and of course you can do the same to them, what´s so cool about this is the following: when you shoot all of your enemies down (standard: three) you will get extra money of a dark underground figure that shows up after the race, sometimes this guy pays your more then when you finish first. But there is also an option available to disable weapons so this game could be a little bit more legal if you know what I mean.

Features:
Death Rally contains six different cars from an old crappy Volkswagen Beetle to a super car with two guns, and an awesome top speed and much better armour. As I told you before you can also upgrade your car, but there is also another nice option, you are namely able to buy other underground stuff like spikes, mines, sabotage one of your enemy's cars before the race and the best thing turbo-booster, you don't get these things for free but they are not very expensive so that's not a big problem, and when you don't have enough money just loan some money of the bank, but look out when you do this because when you borrow money you also have to pay a lot of extra money, for example when you borrow $7.500 you have to pay back $12.500 after a couple of races, so watch out when you use this. For the rest Death Rally contains 19 different tracks, all tracks look different and contain fantastic background music. Death Rally also gives you the opportunity to play this game with some of your friends, for example by serial, network or modem, you can play this up to four players.

The Graphics:
The graphics of this great game are extremely good for a game with a 3D Top-View camera position, I'm serious about that. This game looks very good for its age and I think it also looks good these days especially when you think of the fact that this game is more then seven years old. When you expect good graphics you also need a fast PC, that's logical but Death Rally doesn't need a very fast system because it runs fine on a Pentium 75+. When this game came out I was wondering about the low system requirements because I had an old 486 system that time and most of the games (games like POD, Screamer 2, Heretic 2) didn't run fine on my old system but Death Rally did.

Music and Sounds:
Also the music and sounds are pretty good especially the music, the music sounds like techno music which is extremely cool. The music is recorded in high quality and when you go back to 1996 it uses a very modern music format called "MOD", a nice thing of those music files is that you can play them with MOD-file compatible applications, for example Winamp.

The Gameplay:
Another important thing is the gameplay, well I can tell you the gameplay is also very good, but there are some weak points, for example the car is almost uncontrollable sometimes (especially when you have a fast car), but when you use a use a slowdown utility this won´t be a problem at all ;-). I have to say that the game standard uses some stupid buttons to control it but when you change it to the standard arrow keys on your keyboard this game will be controllable without a lot of training.

What do you have to do?
First of all you have to choose a character, after that you have to select the colour of your first car and you can also choose what difficulty level you like to use (from easy to very hard). To become a good Death Rally player you have to collect money, you can do this by accepting underground jobs, like shoot down "Ted's car", pick up some money during the race or finish first or second, but also watch out for this because when you fail you will loose a lot of money. You also can collect money by finishing in first, second or third position (how higher your position how more money you will get), you will also collect race points when you finish in one of those positions, the only point why you should need those points is to race against the master of this game, and when you finally win this race a small video will be displayed and in the end it will show "The End". Normally you will beat the whole game in a couple of hours which is very short in my eyes; I think this is almost the only weak point of this game.

Conclusion:
I want to call you a lucky basted when you own an official copy of this game, but otherwise you can download it from here. To get a small impression what kind of game this is, you can just download the demo (shareware) version, this one is available here too. So when you are looking for a good old classic you really have to try this good looking game. One last thing, Windows 2K/XP users use VDM-Sound to play this game with sound support and to play it on normal speed (you can find this tool in our application selection).

Btw thats the no-cd hack for it. great if you want to play network death rally against 3 other people. You can also network over dosbox using IPXNET protocol servers.

:)

DOSBOX COMMAND LINE:

IPX TRUE

[enter]

IPXNET STARTSERVER

Tunneling started it should say

then get the other users to do the same with IPX TRUE.
Then they can connect to your virtual server using the following:

IPXNET CONNECT (host's ip address)

USER CONNECTED TO HOST @ (ip address)

Run Death rally and start a network game. This set of command lines also works for old Dos doom, quake, blood, redkneck rampage. For a matter of fact...any dos game that uses an IPX net protocol.
:)

have fun!
