I'll just start with a short introduction about the FIFA game series. Many soccer-gaming fans know the FIFA series as "One of the best soccer game series ever made". Every year, the developer of the FIFA games, Electronic Arts, releases a new, and mostly better, FIFA game. Every game features better graphics, newer players and more extras. Nowadays the FIFA games are still very popular

Switching to FIFA 98: Road to World Cup. The graphics aren't bad for 1997 but could be better. Too bad is that most players have the same face or have a very similar face which is much better in later FIFA games. The crowd is also a nice extra, it's not very detailed, but quiet nice. At some points the crowd gets blurred up together, well that doesn't matter too much when you are playing the World Cup mode because you won't really notice it when you are "in the game". The players move very smoothly and realistic, when you slide someone out, he'll fall down and the opponent may get a free kick or you get a yellow, a red card or when you are lucky you'll pick up the ball.

The gameplay is not too bad. The controls are easy to learn, well that's because there aren't many buttons, you've a button to kick the ball, one for close combat action (like sliding and taking the ball away) and one for a kick straight forward to the moon, a lop. The players aren't acting very realistic when someone gets a free kick or a yellow card he will make a little move but that's it, the player starts complaining a little, and then he just stands still like nothing happened and he accepts the reveries choice. However, if he gets a red card, it looks a little bit more realistic: the player starts complaining on the reverie and walk of the field. There is also a great option in the menu where you can change the adjudicator austerity level.

The sound is very interactive, the crowd is acting realistic when some one has made a goal or is near the goal. Also, when the ball misses the goal you hear a disappointing sound. Opposite of the good sound of the crowd is also a bad thing: the commentary. The commentators are good but they always say the same things over and over again and you'll get tired of hearing them after a while and switch the commentary off. For the rest most of the players don't have a name when we look at the "sound" part of the game, which is a shame and still not really solved in later FIFA games.

The main good thing about FIFA: RTWC 98 is that you can choose between many different countries and players. Each country and their players have their own ups and downs. You can even set up your own team and customize the players. You can even change the player's names and numbers. You can also customize their skills: you get a certain amount of points you can give out how good the player is at defending, at attack, how accurate he is etc... For the rest there are quite a lot practice rounds available, like shooting penalties, play against the computer, take corners and get the ball in as less kicks as possible from the middle of the field to the goal. Again, like in the previous FIFA games, there are 3 modes to play: Amateur, Professional and World Class but I've to say that even the "World Class" isn't very hard.

FIFA 98 is an addicting game, even when it's the first time you play it. And if you really like soccer games, this game can work even longer addicting just because it contains tons of features. The graphics are nice, sounds are okay, the players and different stadiums are great. This game is surely recommended for any soccer fan, and for any other people, because this game simply is one of the best 'classic' soccer games around.

You can get more phrases from the commentators if you choose a harder difficulty.
