Game review

Hang-On! I can't believe it, this is the first ever game I bought for my 'Master System 2' when I was a little kid. The game was produced the year I was born which is quite a coincidence! I still have the original boxed version upstairs with my system in perfect condition, ahh, sweet memories. Anyway, enough about me and onto the game...

Put together the eighties, Sega, 2D-graphics and what do you get? Hang-On! An addictive motorbike game which I'm sure frustrated tons of children and their parents around the globe for a ling time (I know it did in my house). Hang-On is one of those games that makes you realise that back in the glen age of gaming, people didn't give a damn how good a game's graphics where, or the fact their 'Sound Blaster Live' made it feel like they was really in the game, no! Back then it was all about he game play. Titles with dusty 16-bit graphics and sound (like Hang-On) really got people going, it was the kind of game you would take around to your friends house after school and challenge to a butt-whipping contest, the kind of game that you could play and then just put away.

Back when I bought this game, it seemed like the hardest thing I had ever come across, and to be truthful with you I never managed to ever get past the first track!! In-fact it's only now, when I write this review that I can honestly say I have done pretty well with it just now, still a little hard going around the corners though, heh.

The game play in Hang-On is basic, but then again what do you expect from a racing game? You start off at the beginning of a track waiting for the lights to change and as you rev-up your bike... RED - AMBER - GREEN and your away! There are no actual like-life racing opponents in Hang-On, so from the start of the game you are basically against the clock. There are other bikers on the tracks but you are not racing against them, their basically there for you to bump into and crash against, heh. Each track is time-related which means unless you get to a checkpoint in time, your clock will run out and you won´t get an extension in how long you have left to complete the course (something that used to get me angry as a child).

The controls are pretty easy, in-fact you can master them with your eyes closed; the 'left' and 'right arrows on your pad make the biker go left and right, the 'B' button was accelerate, and the 'A' button was brake. There´s something about the controls which, believe it or not, took me about 6 months to figure out when I was younger. I could never seem to reach the checkpoint, then one day I accidentally pressed 'down' on the pad thinking it would slow down, but what it actually done was moved the bike up a gear - making it go faster!! It's a stupid thing not to realise, but I thought I would mention it just in-case some of you get fooled, like I did. Also another quick tip; when going around corners let go of the accelerate button now and then, or you will slowly loose control of the bike and crash.

Graphics and Sound - well what can I say? A 16-bit system obviously isn't going to have mind-blowing graphics, but who cares? I think even if the graphics of this game were awesome it wouldn't really make a difference on the game itself, as they wouldn't play a crucial part in the game play. Overall the graphics are enough to be enjoyed. The sound on the other hand is a little dull, I mean it has all the sound effects you basically need (roaring of the engines, corner turning, etc), but I wouldn´t have liked to have heard maybe a music score feature in the game, I think it would have been pretty nice, but I guess I can't have everything I want!
